Canadian compliance

canada.jpegI’m in Montreal this week and marveling at the fact that everyone speaks both French and English fluently.  This is not like traveling to France or Spain where people will sometimes speak English with you.  In Canada everyone is fluent, and they all assume that I speak French also.

I enjoy making use of the little French I know, words such as, bonjour, bonswa, merci, and no français.  But, being here reminded me of the subtle difference in enforcing PCI compliance that apply in Canada.

As you know many of the card brands (MasterCard, American Express, etc.) have compliance programs that are enforced globally, while Visa is made up of 6 different regions that enforce compliance a little different from each other.

In Canada, compliance levels are a little different so be sure to check out the Visa Canada website.  Be sure to note that there are Levels 1-4 and then a 4(a) and 4(b).  Everyone needs to be compliant, but Level 4(b) merchants do not need to validate compliance.

Again, be sure to contact your acquirer or processor if you are unsure about what you must to do validate your PCI compliance.

Something to remember when working with US companies with operations in Canada. Visa Canada will typically accept a US Report On Compliance (ROC) if you get their approval BEFORE you start your PCI compliance work.
