TJX exposure updated in latest court filing to 94 million

October 25th, 2007 by admin Posted in Credit Card Fraud, Merchant

tjmaxx.jpgI received several calls yesterday from media outlets looking for more information on the story, but I am unable to discuss this point directly. The Boston Globe is running with a story about the updated TJX timeline and the events running up to the latest court filing.

Oct 23: Court filings in a case brought by banks against TJX say the number of accounts affected by the thefts topped 94 million.

Earlier this month TJX settled a consumer lawsuit and now this.  This underscores the continuous and long term potential consequences of not adhering to the PCI DSS standard.

Not unexpectedly, the court case is bring a lot out of the woodwork.

The suing banks are seeking access to the Forensic reports and previous Reports on Compliance.

Does anyone remember that the initial estimate of cards disclosed was only 20M. Also, initial reports indicated that General Dynamics and IBM were involved. The 2 assessors and forensic examiner were not previously disclosed.

Did you happen to see the Boston Globe story on the $880K fine from Visa? $500K was due to the seriousness of the breach, the rest to continuing to store track data. Interesting to see if/when the other brands weigh in. Story is at: http://www.boston.com/business/globe/articles/2007/10/29/visa_fines_bank_after_losses_in_tjx_breach/
