Do cut cables affect PCI in the Middle East and Northern Africa?
February 4th, 2008 by admin Posted in Third-Parties
The Middle East has been affected by a fourth underseas cable being cut. I don’t think this has had any impact on the state of PCI compliance, but it could have a minor impact on any e-commerce fraud that occurred over these pipes. No Internet = No shopping-cart hacks.
Sadly, I suppose it also affects acceptance in those areas. All those outsourced call centers and IT departments may have a hard time accepting payments or fixing your servers remotely.
In the mean time, make sure you have your third-party contracts updated (PCI DSS requirement 12.8) and, if you are a processor or service provider, that you have all connected entities accounted for (PCI DSS requirement 12.10.)

I have spoken with a number of our telecommunication clients that operate around the world regarding the problem with the cable cuts off of Egypt. Most regard it as an annoyance. It has caused them to reroute traffic through Asia and over the Pacific and take other routes to avoid these cuts. However, most of the issues with these cables is related to less robust carriers and ISPs that did not plan ahead for just such a disaster.

I agree, it’s not a total black-out as it is a disruption. I hope they get the cables repaired shortly.
