World Bank is Repeatedly Hacked
October 10th, 2008 Posted in PCI DSSJust when we thought it was getting bad in our industry the media reports that the World Bank Group’s computers were hacked repeatedly in the last year. You can read the article here.
According the the article, malicious software was placed on the highly restricted treasury systems. Additionally, it was announced that the criminals had full access to all systems for nearly a month in June and July. The bank’s senior technology manager is calling this an ‘unprecedented crisis’. In total 6 major breaches have been detected in the last year with at least two originating from IP addresses in China.
The World Bank is responsible for supporting developing countries and is comprised of 185 countries supporting two primary institutions. The International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (IBRD) and the International Development Association. (IDA). The institutions have differing missions but provide grants, and low interest loans to developing countries for education, health, infrastructure and other needs.
